Universong 42 was the 42nd edition of the Universong Contest, held for third time in a row in the United Kingdom, after the two previous editions held in Manchester (England) and Cardiff (Wales). This time the event was held in Newcastle, England, becoming this the third time the event is hosted by England and the fifth time it is hosted by the United Kingdom, after the winning of Alexandra Burke with the song "The silence" the previous edition in Cardiff, Wales. This Universong edition was held from July 21st to August 7th, 2012, with 39 countries taking part.
For the very first time, Liechtenstein won the USC title with the song "The way I like it" by the German singer Mandy Capristo, collecting a total of 136 points in a close race. Even though, it wasn't clear who the winner would be in the early to middle voting stages of the voting, having in the last six rounds, showing a clear trend towards three particular countries - Liechtenstein, Poland and FYR Macedonia. Indeed, when two countries remained to vote, "Consequences" by Edyta Gorniak, representing Poland was in the lead with 125 points, Capristo in second with 124 points, and the Macedonian representative Dimitar Andonovski, with the song "Ovo nebo znae se" was having 123 points. The second-to-last country to vote was Andorra, who gave no points to neither these three countries, allowing the last voting country, Azerbaijan, to define the result of the contest. Poland received 2 points from Azerbaijan, which could give the possibility to either Liechtenstein or FYR Macedonia to catch up, despite Poland remained in a temporal first place position. Finally, after the 12 points from Azerbaijan went to Liechtenstein, it was declared the overall winner, while Poland finished their USC adventure with 127 points in second place and FYR Macedonia remained third with 123 points, after not receiving points from neither Andorra nor Azerbaijan. The top 5 was completed by the representatives of Hungary and Turkey.
