OVSC redirects here. Did you mean Onlinevision Song Contest?

Ourvision Song Contest (abbreviated OVSC), sometimes spelled OurVision Song Contest, is a song contest on Youtube. The contest is managed by 3 persons from Sweden named Kristoffer, Nikolai and Paulina. They are the founders of the Contest Forums and this Wiki. OVSC was the first contest to use Weebly as website, to have user score, to have awards and to use Wikipedia tables. It was also the first contest to have a national selection. It is the second known contest to have been founded after World Music Contest which was created only a couple of days earlier. The contest has been using semi-finals since the 3rd edition. The number of participants in each edition has ranged from 23 (OVSC #24) to 44 (OVSC #21).

Rules

The basic rule for participants is that they have to vote in the same Semi-Final as their song is participating in as well as in the final if they would qualify for it. If they fail to do so, they will be unable to submit an entry to an upcoming edition of OVSC. Users who repeatedly fails to vote when they are obligated to do so can be suspended from further participation. Users can not vote for their own song but they can vote for their own country if someone else submitted that entry. One song can be submitted by an user for each edition. Anyone with an Youtube account that is older than 30 days is allowed to vote, not only the participants. Users who use multiple accounts to vote for their entry will be banned from the contest. Telling friends/family to vote for your entry is also cheating in OVSC.

Submitting

There are several rules regarding if a song can participate or not. All the rules can be found on the OVSC forums. Some basic rules are that songs must have been released after year 2000, a rule which was introduced for the 6th edition. Cover versions which charted internationally are allowed, acapella songs are allowed and songs can not only contain music but they have to be properly constructed. Songs can not be longer than 4 minutes and 30 seconds, a rule which was introduced for the 22nd edition. In very few cases exception for these rules are made.

OVSC was the first contest to give additional options when submitting an entry to their contest. These options are now requirements as of the 22nd edition. Participants must choose the image that is displayed in the recap video as well as the 20 second time frame that will be heard in the recap. Participants must provide the country, artist, song, video link and time frame and image in the same private message.

Voting system

The same voting system is always used. 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points are to be given to 10 of the participating songs. In some national selections for OVSC, the voting system may be different.

Editions

Each edition is 9 days long with a new contest starting one day after another contest has ended. Both semi-finals and the final lasts for 3 days each. The 17th edition was the first edition with a different length as it lasted for 6 days instead of 9 days with 2 days of voting for both semi-finals and the final. Also the 24th edition was reduced to 6 days instead of 9 with the reason given being there were no national selections going on. This was also the first edition of the longest break in the history of the contest which lasted for around 3 months.

Special editions

Main article: OVSC, Song of the Decade

Ourvision Song Contest was the first contest to announce a special edition. Their only special edition so far was called "OVSC, Song of the Decade". The winner of the first edition was Gabrielle Leithaug with the song "Ring meg" which finished as runner up in the 6th edition. The second winner was also a runner up. Aura Dione with the song "Geronimo" won the second special edition after having finished as runner up in the 19th edition. There are also national Song of the Decade editions. So far 4 of these have been held, two of them for Poland and both of them won by Sylwia Grzeszczak who thereby have had the best 2 polish songs accordings to voters out of 20 polish entries.

Partner contest

Ourvision Song Contest had 4 official partner contests before taking a 3 month break in March 2012. They were the World Music Contest, Simple Song Contest, Tubevision Contest and OK Song Contest. WMC became a partner contest already in June, 2011. SSC joined in September, TVC in October and OKSC in November. WMC became inactive by the end of 2011 and was dropped as partner contest a few months later as the host announced retirement of the contest. Also OKSC and SSC announced retirement and were removed as partner contests. TVC took a break for a while during the same time as OVSC had a break. The contest then picked up again as OVSC also came back and thereby remained a partner contest.

OVSC started looking for new partner contest after their break between March and June 2012. Some candidates were the Globalvision Song Contest and the Amazing Music Contest. World Vision Contest was the first contest to apply as OVSC returned. The application was reviewed but not fully approved. OVSC announced they would follow the next edition of WVC and demanded a few improvements had to be made if the application was to be accepted. Also GSC sent a submission which was accepted after a couple of days, making them the first new partner contest of OVSC in July 2012.

AMC have yet to submit a new application however the contest has recently returned from a break and could possibly apply in the near future as the contest starts again.

Jury

Ourvision Song Contest have a jury. The job of the jury is to listen to all entries and rank them from the best song to the worst song. There are two members of the OVSC jury at the moment, one from Ukraine and one from United Kingdom. The jury members are adults who have followed Eurovision Song Contest for a very long time and is known to have significantly more similar taste to the split jury voting rather than the split televoting in Eurovision. The jury rankings are made public after each edition and were for a while used to draw the semi-finals before the contest started. Today the semi-finals are drawn entirely random. After a vote on the OVSC forums, users wanted the jury to give one single vote in each Semi-Final and in the Final. This has planned to start for several editions since then but have yet to take effect. OVSC switched out one jury member, one from Norway to the current from Ukraine in early 2012 to give some eastern perspective.

National selections

Main article: List of national selections

OVSC was the first contest to have national selections. Participants can host national selections for the contest instead of submitting an entry if they want. There has been several national selections for the contest since OVSC #10 which was the first edition to have them. The current record is 14 national selections for the 24th edition of the contest, the first edition after a break the contest had between March and June 2012.

Hosting a national selection gives 3 points instead of the 2 which users gets when they submit an entry the regular way. National selections can only be hosted for two editions in advance.

Among the longest running national selections for OVSC are Danish Music Contest for Denmark and MY Sound for Malaysia.

Awards

Ourvision Song Contest was the first contest to give awards. In the first two editions of OVSC, more than 10 awards were given during each edition. Most of the awards were then removed because they felt unnecessary. The awards are given by the jury and is based on their jury rankings. The four awards which have been given since then are the Jury Award, Hit Award, Heart Award and Voters Award. The NS Award was introduced for the 16th edition.

Jury Award

See also: List of OVSC Jury Award winners

The Jury Award is given to the song which the jury thought deserved to win the contest. Before the jury rankings were introduced for the 6th edition, the jury gave the award to the song in the final top 10 which they thought deserved to win the most.

Hit Award

See also: List of OVSC Hit Award winners

The Hit Award is given to a song which is not famous worldwide. Only songs that haven't charted outside their country of origin are eligible to receive the award with some exceptions where the song charted in a neihbouring country as well. It is always given to a song which performed well both on the jury rankings and in the final itself. The original purpose of the award was to award it to a surprisingly good song which very few had heard before.

Heart Award

See also: List of OVSC Heart Award winners

The Heart Award is given to a song which deserved to qualify for the final but didn't. The highest non-qualifier on the jury rankings always receives this award. Before the semi-finals were introduced for the 3rd edition, any country on the bottom half of the final result could receive the award.

Voters Award

See also: List of OVSC Voters Award winners

The Voters Award is not given by the jury but instead by the OVSC managers. It is given to the country which users showed least signs of neighbour voting which means that the award is given towards the participating users and not the songs. Voting in the final only is looked at to determine the award. Previously both the semi-final and the final were looked at. OVSC is considering removing this award.

NS Award

See also: List of OVSC NS Award winners

The NS Award, short for National Selection Award, is given to the best OVSC national selection. It is given by the OVSC managers and was introduced for the 16th edition. The most complicated national selection doesn't have to be the best one. Voting and submitting songs should be easy. A lot of different factors will be taken into account when this award is given.

User score

Ourvision Song Contest was the first contest to give user score. It was introduced for the 3rd edition together with the removal of most of the previous awards. Users gets 2 point for every time they submit a song or vote in an OVSC contest and 1 point every time they vote in any national selection or special editions which are hosted for OVSC. Hosting a national selection gives 3 points instead of the 2 which users get when they submit a song.

Previously only certain national selections gave user score. MY Sound was the first national selection to give OVSC user score followed by Danish Music Contest and then by Swedish Sounds. When certain national selections started giving user score, the original user score of all participants was multiplied by two. From the beginning, voting and submitting songs to OVSC gave 1 point. After the change it gave 2 points and voting in certain selections gave 1 point.

OVSC have stated that anyone should be able to see their user score on their website in the future but for now only the top 20 users can be seen. Users can send a private message on Youtube and ask how many points they have if they are curious. Because of the many users who only enter OVSC once or twice, users with 10 user score or less are deleted every 3 months unless they have recently started participating actively. The userscore was often updated rather frequently but have lately been updated only once every second or third edition. On July 2, 2012, an user score update was published for the first time, showing a list of all users who had gained points since the last update and how many points each they had gotten.

Hall of Fame

Two artists are currently members of the OVSC Hall of Fame. They are Beatrix Ramosaj who joined during the third edition and Gulcin Ergul who joined during the fourth edition. The Hall of Fame contains artists who have talked about OVSC or even talked to the OVSC managers.

Beatrix Ramosaj saw a comment from OVSC on an audio video of her song "Dreams come true" which had been submitted by escAlbania1 to the third edition of OVSC. The third edition had actually already finished when she sent a private message through Youtube to OVSC staff asking what the contest was all about and if she was required to do anything. OVSC told her that the contest had ended and that she had finished in 5th place for Albania out of 24 songs. She was very happy for the result and posted the result tables on her Facebook page. Beatrix also thanked OVSC in a Twitter post during the 9th edition for posting a thread about one of her new songs on their forums.

Gulcin Ergul saw a lot of messages from her fans about OVSC. The fans had seen a comment from OVSC on the music video of her song "Ara Ara" which had been submitted by superXxxmausixxx to the fourth edition of OVSC. The final had just started when she decided to post the recap video on her Facebook page. A big number of votes from her fans were submitted but most of them could not be counted since they weren't properly submitted. Gulcin eventually finished runner-up for Turkey, close behind Eric Saade's song "Hearts in the Air" for Sweden. Gulcin posted the final result on Facebook. She had earlier linked to OVSC's official website, causing it to reach a record high 560 unique visitors in a single day.

Design

Video

The original video design was very standard. The first edition only had flags in the recap with annotations for country, artist and song title. In the result video there were however images of the artists as well. In the second and third edition a standard design of a black background with an image of the artist and flag was used. The text for each entry faded in and out after being added in the movie making program. For the fourth edition to the sixth edition, the text was written on the images instead. For the 7th edition and forward, one of the participating users gave OVSC a new video design and logotype for the videos for free. This design became popular but was used for quite sometime and OVSC finally decided they needed a change. For the 21st edition, after the second edtion of OVSC, Song of the Decade, a new design was introduced, also this created by a participating user. The new design was slightly criticized but remains today as the design used for every edition.

It has been stated by OVSC that the design will change more often in the future. It has also been said that once they have 4 different designs they will all be used one after the other and over and over. This means that the design used from OVSC #7 to OVSC #20 will likely be seen once again.

Logos

A new official logo was introduced for the 15th edition. Users could vote for their favourite out of 6 options.

Music

The sound which is played at the start of the videos was created by the OVSC managers using a music making program. There has been attempts to bring in new sound but users have stated that they prefer to original theme. Apart from the original music sling there was a long theme song created but it has rarely been used. In some editions, cut out parts of this extended theme has been used in the videos.

The original theme song for Tubevision Contest was also created by OVSC and given for free to TVC.
