Song Contest Wiki

KLE 2 was the sophomore edition of what would become the annual Luxembourgeois national festival, whose winner would be invited to represent the Grand Duchy at the subsequent Eurovisn't Song Contest. Held for the second year in the Grand Théâtre of Luxembourg City, KLE had gained a number of fans in Luxembourg and abroad on the basis of its first edition and the work of Poire Noire, but was still in an experimental stage, with the same format as KLE 1 that would be most unfamiliar for almost all KLE fans these days.

Its organisers, Fauxnsehen Lëtzebuerg, normally referred to as FLUX, had greatly boosted their profile since the first KLE and were beginning to rival RTL, gaining support for showing initiative in getting a platform for local artists outside of the Grand Duchy. They were still a comparatively minor channel though, and struggled to attract many high profile artists to the contest, but this time all four acts were rather well known in the country, with the winner, Point-Virgule, already well established as a major commercial artist.

Contenders[]

Once again, FLUX managed to convince four artists to take part in the festival, who were, in order of performance:

  1. Vozes distantes were the act brought in to defend Éislek's victory in KLE 1. An experimental electro-fado group with evocative and often distorted and eerie instrumentals and poëtic, saudadic lyrics, they also incorporate worldbeat and avant-garde into their signature sound.
  2. Clown College Dropouts were entrusted with being the débutant representatives of Minett, the region containing Luxembourg's cultural capital, Esch-sur-Alzette. They were known for their anarchic, high energy performances and their style which combined punk, ska and hard rock.
  3. Point-Virgule was one of the artists with the biggest commercial success leading into the contest. and not for nothing. She defied all expectations placed on punctuation marks with her famously energetic and sensual stage shows, genre-defying compositions and her forays into other arts like acting.
  4. The show was once again rounded off by Fourth Person, the only returnee. A true musical chameleon who defied genre definition and who constantly changed their name to defy their burgeoning fame, this time was no different, as they went by Filler Choice in this KLE. They got their start in the electro and acid house scenes but became a prolific producer of multiple different styles.

In a format that will be most unfamiliar to the majority of modern day KLE viewers - in the first round of voting, there were only four artists to choose from, and none of which played their prospective KLE entries. Instead, they were introduced to the audience, along with a few renditions of previous songs they had produced, and the 100% televote was entrusted with choosing their favourite, who would go on the following night to perform four prospective songs. Filler Choice seemed to be the early favourite, but like in year 1, they lost out with later voters, and Point-Virgule got the nod.

In the second phase of the voting, viewers were invited to choose between four songs of deliberately contrasting styles, all written and composed by ; : the big-band (Not some) Fancy Comma, the country stomper She don't know my name, the steamy electroclash (Why don't we) ⸘‽ [Interrobang] and the skate punk Life is a run-on sentence. Round two's clear winner was (Why don't we) ⸘‽ [Interrobang], which enjoyed an almost 120 pt lead over the next closest entry. The provocative winners' reprise where ; cavorted and writhed on stage with multiple other punctuations proved quite controversial, with the Grand Luke of Luxembourg (not to be confused with the Grand Duchess) leaving mid-performance.

To promote her entry, Point-Virgule embarked upon a European tour, namely the ;) tour, which visited Vaduz, Bern, Leipzig, Łódź, Bilbao, Aarhus, La Rochelle and Malmö. Point-Virgule also appeared in a number of different pre-parties. In the Montenegrin pre-party in Budva, the Luxembourgeois delegation had a personal catastrophe, as Left Parenthesis, the main dancer in ;'s performance, dived in front of a bullet directed at ;, and later died in nearby Bar.

Luxembourg once again had the honour of opening the show, this time in semi-final 2. Point-Virgule delivered a very high-octane performance, complete with a tango in the dark, aerial acrobatics, a dive into the crowd and an explosion. In the semi-final, Luxembourg were the 5th of 10 qualifiers, six points adrift of the top 3. In the final, ; achieved 10th position. Combined with the 7th place for Poire noire, this was enough for Luxembourg to achieve automatic qualification into Eurovisn't 3.

Observations and Firsts[]

  • Point-Virgule's impact on KLE would outlast her participation - she would be named deputy head of delegation in year 4 and held the rôle until year 11, playing a major part in artist selection.
  • Her entry was the first of a long tradition of Luxembourgeois songs with lyrics in more than one language.
  • Vozes distantes' third place was the first of several they received in both KLE and Sweden's Melodifakestivalen.
  • Fourth Person/Filler Choice's close second place was the best result for Mëttelland until Maëlle's win in KLE11.
